Smoker's Bow Captain's Armchair, Victorian Style in Elm and Beech

A traditional smoker's bow armchair, the form once found in offices, taprooms and captains' quarters alike. The low curved back sweeps round into the arms in one continuous bow, supported on a row of turned spindles, and sits above a shaped saddle seat on turned legs. It is a generous, settled sort of chair — the kind that tends to become someone's favourite spot without much ceremony. Described as elm and beech, which is the usual pairing for chairs of this type: a solid elm seat with beech turnery. It is Victorian in style; without a maker's stamp we would not want to date it more precisely than that, so please treat the period as indicative rather than certain. There are no visible labels or marks noted. This one came to us through a house clearance and has not yet had a detailed condition assessment.
